About this work:
Metamorphosis
I. Lento poco rubato
II. Agitato
III. Interlude
IV. Andante Cantabile
V. Presto

Metamorphosis is a chamber work for string quintet and piano that I began in the summer of 2008 and finished in January 2009. The was originally a string quartet, but I later decided to add the contrabass and piano. While this ensemble may be referred to as a piano sextet, I prefer to call it a string quintet with piano, mainly because the piano does not act as a soloist in the piace, but more as an equal part of the string ensemble, weaving in and out of the string textures. The idea to write this piece came to me at a time when I was listening to and studying the string quartets of Gyorgy Ligeti, particularly his first, nicknamed the "Metamorphosis Nocturnes." It is because of Ligeti's influence that I gave this work the title I did. This piece is my way of paying homage to a composer who has had an important impact on my music, and who I feel is one of the 20th century's greatest composers.
