JOHN PLANT was born in Yonkers, New York, in 1945. He studied composition with George Todd at Middlebury College (Vermont), where he also pursued intensive literary and classical studies, and with Bruce Mather and Charles Palmer at McGill University in Montreal. His music reflects my fascination with literature, languages and the human voice, and includes settings of Lorca, Sappho, E.E. Cummings, Göran Sonnevi, Ungaretti, Elizabeth Bishop, and many others, for combinations ranging from piano trio to full orchestra. His Yeats opera, The Shadowy Waters, was performed in Montreal in 2005. Recent works include a song cycle entitled Babel is a Blessing, eight songs in eight languages; and settings of Elizabeth Bishop's poems Sandpiper and Sunday 4 A.M. for soprano Suzie LeBlanc. His concert opera on the Robert Dziekanski tragedy, entitled 'I will fly like a bird' will be premiered at the Scotia Festival in Halifax on May 31, 2008. He is currently at work on a saxophone/piano piece for Boston saxophonist Jennifer Bill. Plant taught composition and music history at Concordia University from 1993-2008; he retired in 2008 to devote himself to composition, and now lives by the sea in Nova Scotia. He is a citizen of both Canada and the U.S.

I will fly like a bird, a concert opera in tribute to Robert Dziekanski This is a concert opera to a libretto by J.A. Wainwright, inteneded as a tribute to Robert Dziekanski, who was fatally tasered by policemen at Vancouver airport.
