Gerald Starlight began study of the shakuhachi in 2001 with Shoji Hagiwara of Yokohama Japan, resulting in the attainment of the level of Dai-Shihan, grand master of shakuhachi, afterwards this led to the creation of his CD/album Under The Sky, released in 2009, recorded at Harvestworks studios, Soho, New York, the album consists of ten compositions composed by Starlight. The unique feature of the music is that Starlight performs on all instruments on this multitracked recording. In late 2009 Starlight composed and performed on all instruments once again on a multitracked CD/single titled Autumn Rain, it consists of a single composition attributed to the rainy season, recorded at Harvestworks studios, Soho, New York, released in 2010; also in the same year a project of thirty one compositions titled Shakuhachi By Starlight in MP3 format features Starlight's composing skills and improvistations on solo and multitracked works that exceed the limitations of the written score. In 2011 Gerald Starlight released Cloudscapes featuring the poem Cloudscapes written by Starlight with narration by Mona Golabek set to music composed by William Grant Still (1895-1978), his piece Serenade performed by The Manhattan Chamber Music Orchestra featuring flute, clarinet, harp and string quintet conducted by Richard Auldon Clark, the premiere was broadcast worldwide on radio station WQXR.org in New York City on March 4th, 2002 as a special tribute to New York City, following the events of September 11th, 2001. The 2011 CD commemorates the 10th anniversary of 9/11. In 2012 a CD/album was released titled The Reiki Journey - Guided Meditations for Mindful Living by reiki master Ginny Mackles and featuring Gerald Starlight playing shakuhachi, this recording is the winner of the Readers' Choice Award 'Best Reiki Music CD 2012'.
The aforementioned recordings Under The Sky, Autumn Rain, Cloudscapes and The Reiki Journey are part of The Rogers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound in the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in New York City and his MP3 collection of thirty-one recordings Shakuhachi By Starlight are part of the New Music USA Online Library in Chelsea, New York City. The music of Gerald Starlight is currently on internet radio broadcasts around the world.
Starlight gave his New York debut recital at Cami Hall 165 West 57th Street, New York City, has appeared at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and has performed in numerous venues including radio and television, in addition to being awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts associated with Meet The Composer programs.
Gerald Starlight is an accomplished musican, composer, performer, artist and producer of his own independent recording label Nirvana Music; recognized as being a peerless innovative shakuhachi player, he is also known for playing a vast number of other instruments and exploring the limitless possibilties of music that reaches beyond classification.
In 2011 Gerald Starlight offered his music to further relief efforts in Japan in the aftermath of the triple crisis of tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster, with all proceeds going to Japan Society benefiting the victims of the tragedy. Also in the same year Starlight produced the CD Cloudscapes as a tribute to America marking the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.
