Visions of the Apocalypse
Jon Fielder
About this work:
Visions of the Apocalypse is a monodrama for baritone and chamber ensemble. The text was written by a long-time friend of mine by the name of David Smith. The piece is about a post-apocalyptic world and the emotions and visions of the last man left on Earth. As he wanders the ruins of the Earth he goes through a number of personal theological issues, questioning the existence of a God, and taking into question the benevolence of that God. His journey eventually leads him to the edge of of the Earth where he is fully surrounded by water. At this point he submits to the idea that what has happened is out of his control and understanding and with his new revelation floats into the ocean and is consumed by the water in a state of jubilant ecstasy.
