Kyle Gann of the Village Voice calls Arthur Jarvinen "one of the subtlest composers of his generation". Arthur Jarvinen (b.1956) is a well-known member of the contemporary music community, having been a featured composer and performer on prominent concerts and festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad for over two decades. He was a founding member of the California E.A.R.Unit with whom he was associated for eighteen years as composer, arranger, and conductor, performing on percussion, electric bass, slide guitar, chromatic harmonica, voice, and electronics. In 1978 he founded the Antenna Repairmen, an experimental percussion trio that continues to this day. In 1995 he established Some Over History, an ensemble dedicated to his own music. Recent projects include a number of collaborations incorporating electronics, voice, and instruments, and drawing on elements of composition, improvisation, theater, and site-specific criteria. Jarvinen has received commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, the American Composers Forum, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Zeitgeist, Alea III, and others. He received a 1990 NEA composer fellowship for The Paces of Yu, a unique percussion work for Brazilian berimbau (a folk instrument) and homemade instruments. He was awarded a 1991 California Arts Council fellowship and received Ohio University's 1997 Achievement In Music Award. Jarvinen's works have been performed and broadcast worldwide by the California E.A.R. Unit, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Xtet, Bang On A Can All Stars, New York New Music Ensemble, Essential Music, Twisted Tutu, Relâche, Zeitgeist, Contemporary Chamber Players, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, New Performance Group, New World Ensemble, Synchronia, 5th Species (Canada), Icebreaker (England), Magnetic Pig (Australia), and Ensemble '88 (Netherlands), as well as various soloists, and his own ensembles The Antenna Repairmen, Some Over History, Kam Fong As Chin Ho (with Ryan Francesconi), Frank Lloyd Wrong (with Francesconi and Scot Ray), and We Are Not Mailmen (with Eric Barber). Arthur Jarvinen is currently on the composition faculty of the California Institute of the Arts.
