Jason Huffman (1978-) is a Boston based composer and trumpet player whose works take inspiration from the interplay of mathematics and the perception of time and sound. His works have been played by the Boston Conservatory Wind and Brass Ensembles, Equilibrium Ensemble, Ludovico Ensemble, Juventas New Music, Callithumpian Consort, Ensemble Interface, the DMC percussion-clarinet duo, Bay Colony Brass, the Charles River Wind Ensemble and the Metropolitan Wind Symphony. He performs with Sound Icon, Equilibrium Ensemble, Boston Opera Collaborative, MetroWest Opera, New England Philharmonic, Brookline Symphony, Lowell House Opera, and the Charles River Wind Ensemble and is a founding member of the Equilibrium Concert Series and Boston Modern Brass. He received a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Trumpet Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music in Composition from Boston Conservatory where upon graduation he received the Roger Sessions Memorial Composition Award. His primary teachers of composition have included Richard Hoffmann, Curtis Hughes, Dalit Warshaw and Jan Swafford, with additional studies with Andy Vores, Edward Miller, Randolph Coleman, John Luther Adams, John Harbison, Pauline Oliveros, Christian Wolff, John Adams, Tan Dun and Louis Lane.

Visual Cognition In March 2015, Boston Modern Brass will present a program of works that explore the connections and relationships between sound and visual cognition. Works by Jason Huffman and Kevin Joest, exploring the inspiration of paintings in the composition process and Hume's thought experiment on the missing shade of blue, will have their world premieres. Additional pieces by Edward Miller and Gottfried von Einem take inspiration from the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and Karl-Hartwig Kaltner respectively. Carl Ruggles' "Angels" for muted brass choir and Henry Brant's post-apocalyptic "The Fourth Millennium" round out the theme of the night. C.
